MESMA talk at Global MPA Enforcement Conference, San Fransisco
Governing Marine Protected Areas resilience through diversity

Peter Jones gave an invited opening plenary talk at the Global Marine Protected Area Enforcement conference in San Francisco on Monday 26th November. His presentation, based on the findings of the MPA Governance project, which includes additional analyses carried through the MESMA project, highlighted that governance systems tend to be more resilient to the driving forces that can challenge the fulfilment of conservation objectives where a larger diversity of different incentives are used in combination to enforce restrictions. He discussed how this is analogous to ecological systems, which tend to be more resilient where a larger diversity of species is present.

The conference, organised by WildAid, was attended by 180 people from more than 30 countries who are involved in managing Marine Protected Areas and enforcing conservation restrictions. The governance analysis framework being applied to the MESMA case studies was adapted from that used in the MPA Governance Project and this conference provided information on case studies beyond the EU on how different incentives are combined to promote effectiveness.
